Propolis is effective against Candida

Propolis is the material that bees produce and use to build and repair damage to their hive. A study published in the Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine found that propolis has potent antifungal properties against Candida albicans, the fungal pathogen behind yeast infection.

  • The researchers compared the antifungal activity of propolis, Thymus vulgaris, Caryophillium aromaticus, Echinophora platyloba, Allium cepa, and Cinnamomum zeylanicum against C. albicans. They also evaluated the minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) and minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of the extracts from the said sources.
  • Analysis revealed that propolis extract with MIC90 and MFC equal to 39 and 65 mcg/mL, respectively, possess the highest antifungal activity when compared to all the other extracts used in the study. T. vulgaris and A. cepa showed the least effect on the fungi.

The researchers concluded that propolis may be used to control C. albicans although they admit that further investigation is needed on the matter.
