Blackcurrant prevents bone loss in menopausal women

Researchers at the University of Connecticut revealed that blackcurrant could help prevent bone loss. In their study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, the team looked at the effect of blackcurrant on bone mass in an estrogen-deficient mouse model.

  • Previous studies revealed that blackcurrant anthocyanins have antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties that could potentially improve bone mass.
  • For the study, the researchers ovariectomized or sham operated 54 mice.
  • Then, the team gave the mice either a basal diet or a basal diet containing anthocyanin-rich blackcurrant extract.
  • They measured bone mineral density, trabecular bone volume, and serum bone markers.
  • Ovariectomy significantly reduced bone mineral density and trabecular bone volume, but the treatment of blackcurrant reduced ovariectomy-induced bone loss.
  • In addition, the treatment reduced bone resorption activity and osteoclast-like cell formation.
  • These outcomes suggest that blackcurrant may mitigate menopausal bone loss.

In conclusion, blackcurrant may help prevent osteoclast-induced bone loss in menopausal women.
